Addition with different denominators

This year we have worked on many things in maths but one that I really have enjoyed is addition with different denominators. Adding fractions is really easy and doesn't take much time at all but  when they have different denominators it is a bit harder and takes more time to work on. Since my video is a little fast I am going to tell you how to add fractions with different denominators.

Step 1: First of all what you do is find the lowest common multiple.

example:
3| 6, 9, 12, 15
----------------   =12 is the lowest common multiple
4| 8, 12

Step 2:  Times the number by however many it is to get to the LCM. What ever you times the op by you times the bottom by.

example:
 3
---
 4

3x3 = 9 and 4x3 = 12 so the fraction is   9
                                                            ----
                                                             12

 1
---
3

1x4 = 4 and 3x4 =  12 so the fraction is 4
                                                           ----
                                                           12

Step 3: Add the two fractions to find out what the answer of the fraction is.

 9            4            13               1
---    +   ---    =    ---   or    1  ---
12          12          12               12

  1. Hi Paris
    Great explanation about adding fractions with different denominators, remember next time to slow down your stop motion video before saving it.
